Welcome to Year 4

My name is Mrs Sulway and I have the pleasure of teaching the Year 4 class alongside Mrs Taylor. I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you some details about the work and activities that we have planned for this term and any other information that is relevant.

This term’s topic will be Active Planet. Our main focus will be on rivers in Wales and Great Britain, looking at the issue of flooding. We will also be covering water habitats in Science and will visit the Welsh Water site at Cilfynydd, where the children will undertake a river study looking at plants and animals. Also there will be a careers week where parents will be encouraged to come into school and describe their jobs and what it involves.

We have enjoyed our trips to Llancaiach Fawr and Techniquest.

At Llancaiach Fawr we  looked at life in Stuart times and completed workshops on; sweet meats, children’s lives and the workings of the Local Court.

Updated: Summer Term 2019

English
Through our topic, we will write about the impact of flooding discussing how people cope in the aftermath of such events. We will also be concentrating on a writing poetry, fact files on rivers and Persuasive writing. We will complete a range of comprehension exercises and continue to develop a range of punctuation and spelling patterns.

Mathematics

We will be looking at time involving minutes and seconds and how long activities last along with experiments in science. We will be examining Venn & Carroll diagrams. We will also focus on problem solving with money. Through our daily maths activities we will also look at reading and writing numbers to 10 000 and knowing the value of each number. We will be positioning and comparing 4 and 5 digit numbers and rounding to the nearest 100 and 1000.

We will be multiplying and dividing by dividing by 10 and 100 by moving the digit. We will also be focusing on the 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 times tables. We will be doubling and halving 3 and 4 digit numbers. We will be adding and subtracting numbers using various different strategies. Further to this we will be calculating the perimeter of squares and rectangles, telling the time to the nearest minute, draw lines to the nearest millimetre and represent data using lists, tally charts, tables and diagrams.

Science
The topic is Water World, in which we will study plant and animal life around rivers and pond, looking at birds, fish, amphibians and their life cycles.

Religious Education
The children will study how Ascension is celebrated in our church and stories from the Bible relating to forgiveness.

Value of the half term
FORGIVENESS AND RESPONSIBILITY. We will listen and respond to stories of forgiveness in the Bible and understand that for Christians, Jesus’ death on a cross is the ultimate revelation of God’s all forgiving love, and his sacrifice stands as a source of inspiration to forgive others, no matter what the cost.

Responsibility – We will be exploring what this means in terms of taking responsibility for yourself and others in daily life and in a Christian context -being responsible for the things you say and the actions you take. This theme will be covered in Class and Whole School Worship and referred to in our everyday dealings with pupils.

What can you do to help?
Please hear your child read or read with them on a daily basis, whether it is a school book, library book, comic or on line games. Talk to them about what we have been studying in school and research the subjects with them to build up their knowledge and confidence.

Tell the time with them regularly and give them opportunities to actually handle money – counting it out and working out the change. Practise tables on a regular basis.

We hope you find this information useful. Thank you in anticipation of your continued co-operation and support.

We would welcome anybody who has expertise in any of the areas that we are studying this term to come in and share your experiences with us!  In the meantime, if you have any queries/questions please do not hesitate to contact us at the school.

Diolch yn fawr,
Mrs Taylor
