Welcome to Year 1

My name is Miss Baldwin and I have the pleasure of teaching the Year 1 class.

I would like to inform you of the work and activities planned for your children this term.

This half term our topic will be ‘Active Planet’ and we will become ‘Nature Detectives’. We will use The Gruffalo story book as our narrative text.

Language, Literacy and Communication
In Language, Literacy and Communication we will be looking at different types of writing including; letter writing, describing characters, completing character comparisons and exploring non-fiction texts. 

We will develop our Oracy skills through role play and as we communicate and share our work with others. 

Mathematical Development
In Mathematical Development we will focus on a range of mathematical areas including; place value up to 100, multiplication and division, money, time, 3D shape and recognising half and quarter turns.

Through our topic work we will be exploring and applying our knowledge of number as we collect information by voting and sorting and we will present the data in a variety of ways such as tally charts, bar graphs, lists and tables.    

Personal and Social Development, Well Being and Cultural Diversity
In Personal and Social Development, Well-being and Cultural Diversity we will consider how we can care for woodland animals and how we can care for the environment through recycling.

ICT
In ICT our focus is Creative Media. We will use 2 Simple software to make a presentation about a woodland animal. We will also develop our independent skills when we are using devices to make recordings and to take photographs. 

Welsh
In Welsh we will focus on developing our conversational skills. We will explore specific phrases; ‘Wyt ti eisiau?’, ‘Beth sy’n bod?’ and ‘Ble est ti?.

P.E. (Physical Education)
In PE we will develop and apply our ball skills in tennis and athletics.

Creative Development
In Creative Development we will create the Gruffalo and a new creature using clay and we will explore a Welsh artist. We will focus on making choices when choosing materials and resources. .

Knowledge and Understanding of the World
In Knowledge and Understanding of the World we will spend time in the school forest area. We will look at woodland animal food chains, investigate different habitats and explore the effect humans can have on the environment. Our focus will be to enhance our Numeracy skills and we will collect and record data and we will use a variety of ways to represent and interpret the information.

Homework, Reading and Spellings
Homework books are sent home each Friday with a Literacy, Mathematics or R.E activity. Please return homework by Wednesday each week. 

We encourage your child to complete the traffic light and can you please comment on how your child found the task. If you have any concerns regarding homework please do not hesitate to contact us. 

Reading books are sent home each week. Please make sure your child reads every day. We appreciate a comment to say how well your child has read and whether they have enjoyed the text.

Your child will continue to receive weekly spellings that will be tested on a Monday and new spellings will be sent home. 

Value of the half term
The value of the half term is Forgiveness. We will explore what a prayer is and we will learn about the different types of prayer. We will understand the importance of celebrating Christian festivals as important and happy events and we will explore religious art. 

Other Information
PE is every Friday morning. 

We visit the library every Monday so please can you ensure all library books are returned each week.

What can you do to help?
